C_L.01 Save sea turtles and support environmental protection campaigns on the Caribbean Coast (Costa Rica)

Description of the Project:

The project was founded by the local community to fight the hunting and poaching of turtles in their area. On the one hand they organize nightly patrols to collect turtles’ eggs and to gather them in a breeding station. On the other hand the project includes social and environmental programs. For example, the project works together with the local school and other pedagogic institutions or they organize clean ups of the local beaches. Besides that wildlife observation is possible during the whole year. Volunteers have the chance to observe exotic animals in their natural environment and to study their habit.

Tasks:

Turtle Project:

  • Supporting the nightly patrols in collecting the eggs of the turtles and data
  • Working in the garden and orchards, and contributing to social or environmental activities
  • Teach English to the local community
  • Work schedule: From the beginning/ middle of March to the beginning of October, 4 hours at night (egg laying season) and 2-4 hours gardening during the day
  • Volunteers have one day off per week

Wildlife Observation:

  • Observation of exotic animals
  • Studying the natural habitat of animals
  • Documentation of changes in the wildlife
  • Working in the garden and orchards, and contributing to social or environmental activities
  • Teach English to the local community
  • Work schedule: 5-8 hours a day animal monitoring, gardening and community work
  • Volunteers have one day off per week

Accommodation, Benefits and Costs:

  • Turtle Project: You can stay in the project (22 US$ / day including meals and drinking water)
  • Wildlife Observation: You can stay in the project (13 US$ / day including meals and drinking water)
  • Proyecto Mosaico organizes your placement in the organization and helps you with the transportation to the project location
  • For our work and our services we ask a one-time-only fee of 250 € – regardless of the length of your stay

Requirements:

  • Minimum stay: 1 week
  • Spanish level: Basic
  • English level: Basic
  • Good physical fitness needed
  • Skills and expertise: Interest in animals and community work; further knowledge and skills will be provided by the project
