G_G.01 Work in wildlife protection at a sanctuary in Petén

Location: Petén, Guatemala


Description of the Project:

The Guatemalan organization was founded to prevent illegal trade of endangered species in Petén. Additionally they work in the fields of environmental education, ecotourism, sustainable development and the protection of and research on endangered species in their natural habitat. In the sanctuary, volunteers can take care of endangered species that have been liberated from captivity and help prepare their reintroduction into their natural habitats. Another task is to spread environmental awareness among the population and tourists.


  • Work in the sanctuary and help feeding and caring for the animals, treat injured or ill animals, construct cages, do research on natural eating habits of the animals
  • Support the staff in the field of environmental education or serving the ecotourism
  • Support social projects and environmental activities
  • Working time: working hours are flexible; feeding time in the sanctuary: 7:00-8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.


Minimum stay: 1 week

Spanish level: Basic, English skills needed

Skills and expertise: Experiences in and knowledge of biology (flora and fauna), veterinary or environmental education are helpful, but not required; knowledge or interest in public relations, photography and/or web design

Accommodation, Benefits and Costs:

  • You can stay in the project for 250 US$ in the first and 200 US$ every following week, incl. meals
  • Proyecto Mosaico organizes your stay in the project, Spanish school (Antigua) and your transportation from the airport, furthermore we offer individual assistance provided by the office in Granada before, throughout and after your stay
  • For our work and our services we ask a one-time-only fee of 250€ – regardless of the length of your stay
