G_M.14 Volunteer in different positions in a versatile indigenous Mayan organization (Guatemala)

Description of the project:

The project’s mission is to empower and improve the quality of life for Maya women artisans and their families and to contribute to the preservation and promotion of traditional knowledge, art and culture in Guatemala. To fulfill their mission, the organization offers the female artisans and their families education-driven social programs and market access to International Fair Trade and artisanal networks with a focus on traditional Maya culture and traditions. Currently, the project is working with over seven different indigenous communities in the rural highlands of the departments of Sololá and Quiché, Guatemala. The initiative benefits more than 500 indigenous Mayas through the Youth Education Program, Community Health Program/ Medicinal Plant Garden, Artisan Development Program, and the Fair Trade Market Access Program.

Your tasks – as a volunteer you can support the organization in various projects. For example:

  • Community Health Volunteer works alongside the gardener in weeding & planting,assists in holding workshops, looks for local stores to partner with in selling products, blogs about experiences and takes pictures
  • Development Volunteer/Intern travels to communities and views current programs, researches and identifies grant opportunities and potential donors, writes, edits, and assists with funding proposals
  • Communications & Marketing Volunteer works closely with the Sales and Marketing Manager in developing a marketing plan to promote the products, travels to communities to assist in photography and design implementation, assists in design, graphics, and packaging, manages social media promotion across the organization
  • Artisan Development Volunteer works closely with the Artisan Development Coordinator, travels to communities with the coordinator to meet with artisans, creates a system of monitoring and evaluation to implement with the coordinator and assistshim in developing workshops, projects, and budgets to benefit the artisans, looks for grants and funds to help to support the program
  • Youth Education Volunteer provides support to the students in the project’s Youth Education Program, helps the children of the different communities with their homework, helps students, teaches English


  • Minimum stay: 3 months (depending on your volunteer position)
  • Spanish level: intermediate (depending on your volunteer position)
  • Skills and expertise:
    • In general – The project searches for someone who can work independently, takes initiative, is goal-oriented; patience and willingness to work with a diverse, multicultural team
    • Development Volunteer – someone who can demonstrate progress in the area of fund raising; previous fund raising experience is necessary
    • Communications & Marketing Volunteer – someone who takes initiative, is goal-oriented and an enthusiastic and a flexible person with a desire to contribute to the sustainability of the organization; experience with Social Media and Marketing
    • Youth Education Volunteer – someone who is comfortable traveling to communities via public transportation

Accommodation, Benefits and Costs:

  • You can stay with a host family (for 75 US$ / week) or in a shared flat/ bungalow on the project’s property. The project also offers free accommodation for long-term volunteers
  • Proyecto Mosaico books your lodging, Spanish school and your transportation from the airport, furthermore we offer individual assistance provided by the office in Granada before, throughout and after your stay
  • For our work and our services we ask a one-time-only fee of 250 € – regardless of the length of your stay
