N_F.03 Work with children in neighborhood libraries (Nicaragua)

Location: Granada, Nicaragua

Collage N_F.03

Description of the project:

There are many reasons why Nicaraguan children don’t read books: They are expensive, a high illiteracy rate prevents many parents from reading to their children, many children do not attend school or books are not affordable in schools. The objective of this project is to provide the children with opportunities to discover the world of books and to practice reading. The volunteers can also develop other creative activities with the children like drawing or writing.

Your tasks:

  • Read books to and with the children and make handicrafts with them (the library provides a lot of arts and crafts material. You could also bring things from your home country to advocate the cultural exchange)
  • Play and spend time with the children
  • Work schedule: depending on the projects that the volunteer will participate in, but will likely occupy some hours in the mornings or in the afternoons during the week
  • Vacations: Easter week, one week around Christmas

  • Minimum stay: 1 week
  • Spanish level: At least basic, but some intensive Spanish lessons are recommended
  • Skills and expertise: Creativity, openness, ability to work independently, experiences in tutoring or working with children (helpful, but not required)

Accommodation, Benefits and Costs:

  • You can stay with a host family (from 50 US$/ week incl. breakfast), in a shared flat (from 35 US$/ week), or in a hostel (from 5 US$/ day in a dorm room)
