N_F.12 Work within farming communities to improve their standard of living (Nicaragua)

Description of the project:

This is an organization of farm workers consisting of 6 cooperatives with more than 150 associated families (around 650 people). People in the communities have different backgrounds and practice various ways of farming. The kind of product depends on factors like natural water sources and soil types. The NGO also started a program of scholarships dedicated to the sons and daughters of the partners who are striving to attain secondary and college degrees. Moreover, the program has facilitated the construction of three small libraries managed by young people. They also promote several social projects that try to respond to the specific needs of every community in the cooperative.

Your tasks:

What you are going to do depends on the cooperative you choose. The tasks may be:

  • Help in the department of biology and development (classification of the fauna and flora, other related activities)
  • Teach English to the community members and office staff
  • Help the cooperatives with their daily work (harvesting, fishing, etc.)
  • Participate in various construction activities
  • Clean the surrounding community areas
  • Work schedule: Flexible; Please talk to the leader of the project to agree on a schedule
  • Vacations: Easter week, Christmas


  • Minimum stay: 2 weeks
  • Spanish level: Intermediate
  • English level: Enough to teach, if you choose to give classes
  • Skills and expertise: Interest in biology or ecology, interest or graduation in agronomy, biology or any related natural science, you want to help in sectors like fair trade and the economic development of the country, you are physically in a good condition and willing to work hard

Accommodation, Benefits and Costs:

  • You can stay in a host family in Granada (from 50 US$/ week incl. breakfast) or in a shared flat (from 35 US$/week). You can also live with a host family in the cooperatives (100 US$/ week incl. 3 meals a day)
  • Proyecto Mosaico books your lodging, Spanish school and your transportation from the airport, furthermore we offer individual assistance provided by the office in Granada before, throughout and after your stay
  • For our work and our services we ask a one-time-only fee of 250 € – regardless of the length of your stay
