Description of the project:

Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Central America. This affects the local education standard and system. 20% of Nicaraguan students do not attend school, while only 30% of students reach graduation. This is a result of the poor conditions many Nicaraguans live under. The Project, whose leadership includes community members and expatriate residents, wants to help overcome this reality by providing educational opportunities for youth and adults and leading community development programs in Laguna de Apoyo.  Youth-focused activities include: assistance to primary and pre-school teachers; English classes for grades 1-6; an afterschool enrichment program that integrates environmental education with art and leadership development; and sports training.  Adult-focused activities include evening English classes and Spanish literacy instruction.  Additionally, the Project works on several community development efforts, including a potable water project and sustainable tourism.
