N_G.02 Work with disadvantaged children and teenagers (Nicaragua)

Description of the project:

The organization works with kids and young people: They have a literacy program for working children (mainly from the market), a street work program in different districts where they organize sports, educational and cultural activities. There is also an office that handles court cases to fight for the rights of children. They also give theater, music and handicraft classes and try to educate people in other professions like hair stylist in a beauty salon. In the market they teach the working children with a mobile education center (“moviclub”). In addition they founded a radio station run by young people, and guide young people through micro credits to so they can become financially independent.

Your tasks:

The exact type of work will depend on you and your skills. But basically the work is going to be about:

  • Visiting the less fortunate areas of the region and trying to protect children from bad influences, drugs, etc.
  • Joining the “moviclub”
  • Helping the teachers in the stabilization of the schools
  • Giving theater, music or handicraft classes
  • Participating in any kind of meetings, practices or other activities of the association
  • Administrative work in the office
  • Work schedule: Flexible, but usually 8 hours a day; please talk to the leader of the project
  • Vacations: Easter week, Christmas

Requirements:

  • Minimum stay: 6 months
  • Spanish level: Intermediate
  • Skills and expertise: You have experience or a degree in social work (especially with teenagers or children), you know about Nicaraguan culture and the social difficulties, you have knowledge about methods of working in social sectors and social development or a degree in social sciences, you are interested in communication, you are an open person and like innovations

Accommodation, Benefits and Costs:

  • You can stay in a host family (from 35 US$/week incl. 2 meals a day) or in a shared flat (from 35 US$/week)
  • Proyecto Mosaico books your lodging, Spanish school and your transportation from the airport, furthermore we offer individual assistance provided by the office in Granada before, throughout and after your stay
  • For our work and our services we ask a one-time-only fee of 250 € – regardless of the length of your stay
