Location: Jinotega, Nicaragua

Collage N_G.04

Description of the project:

In 1999 the cooperative began to join the coffee market and today there are 650 men and women with their families organized into 15 different cooperatives producing coffee. The cooperative has developed a model of broadly conceived democratic participation of each and every producer, which proceeds from the respective cooperatives and into which a youth movement is integrated as well. This movement has already produced a lot of coffee inspectors, baristas and counselors for the improvement of quality, a chocolate factory, environmentalists and a group of young painters. The youth movement prepares programs for literacy, music and cultural education. Moreover they have set up a program which is called “Muchachitos del Café” (Children of Coffee). Among its most important contents is elaborating alternative structures of leadership, participation, environmental education, culture and sport.
