United Nations World Water Day

At the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, World Water Day was proposed within Agenda 21. On December 22, 1992, the UN general assembly enacted the proposal in a resolution. The first UN World Water Day took place in 1993 and is held annually by UN-Water on March 22. Ever since, the significance of the event has increased steadily. The UN invites all their member states to celebrate this day by supporting concrete activities within their countries. Throughout the world, member states and non-governmental organizations that promote protecting waters as well as clean water for all have used World Water Day to draw public attention to the critical issues of water in our current times. We regard this annual day as an auspicious contribution to cooperative development assistance in the future.

Our campaign: “Unidos por el Agua“

Organized and realized by Proyecto Mosaico since 2012, the event “Unidos por el Agua” is part of the annual campaign for UN World Water Day. It is a combination of information and activity events in Granada, Nicaragua. Environmental experts from various partner organizations and projects are invited to present current information and practical examples on the subjects of water, energy and climate change to the participants. Cooperation in the fields of water conservation, alternative energies and climate change as well as the exchange of information between experts are effectively reinforced by “Unidos por el Agua.”

The campaign’s aim: Creation of sustainable environmental awareness!

One significant goal is educating the local population on the vital importance of water and the current environmental problems within the region. Particularly, children and young adults should be made aware of the essential significance of clean water and the possibilities of conservation and protection of waters, in order to trigger a long-term progressive change of perception. Furthermore, more volunteers should be attracted to join the local volunteer association, Club Verde of Proyecto Mosaico, promoting the participation of young adults in the long run.
